The new PASCO - Primer :

Without a pretreatment homopolar synthetics, such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene PP), cannot be glued permanently with cyanacrylatic glue. The surface energy of these polyolefines ranges around 3OmN/m, which leads to problems in moistening these materials with the glue. In practice, however, it is just these materials that are frequently employed because of their excellent properties. Still, when glued together, the results were usually either not satisfactory or else it was not possible at all.
Till now, an improvement of the surface adhesion of materials difficult to glue had only been achieved in practise through very expensive methods. An oxidation of the surface of the synthetic material can be achieved through singeing, flaming with a lighter,etching, or mordant as well as by employing the corona or the low-pressure plasma method. 

Apart from the usually very high investment costs, there is often another important disadvantage when gluing with cyanacrylatic glues: in the course of certain methods there is a possibility of acidic cleavage products originating and remaining on the surface (depending on the material). These residues, again, can prevent the hardening of cyanacrylatic glues or may cause a distinct deceleration of the process. Often the activity of the preŹ-treated surfaces decreases within a short period of time, so disruptions of continuous productions may lead to deviations in quality with regard to the joining (decrease in tenacity). Complicated joint constructions, i.e. Eckverbindungenlarger depressions often can not be activated through conventional procedures. 

Due to the unsatisfactory results connected with the pre-treatment procedures mentioned above, alternative methods have been sought for the efficient gluing of homopolar materials with cyanacrylatic glues. 

PASCO©Prime now offers a practical possibility to gain, by simple means a high degree of tenacity when gluing homopolar materials with cyanacrylatic glues. The low-viscous solution is applied to the materials which are usually difficult to glue. After the short time that it takes the nonŹ-polluting dissolvents to evaporate., a quick and - after the final hardening - high-performance and non-ageing joining can be performed with PASCO©FIX glue. The pre-treated surfaces do not have to be processed immediately; the hardening will not be impaired by an intermediate storage of several hours. 

After the application of the PASCO©Prime solution and the 20 - 60 seconds which it takes the dissolvents to evaporate, PASCO©FIX glue can be measured out either automatically or manually in drop- or caterpillar-shape. Then the joining can be performed by fitting the parts together and exerting pressure for a short moment Often a few seconds will do in order to achieve handling tenacity. After the hardening, which may take between a few minutes and several days, depending on the combination of materials, you will often gain combined tension and shear resistance of more than 6N/mm2 with joining involving polyethylene and polypropylene. Depending on the composition of the synthetic material and its strength /thickness, the tenacity of the joining often even exceeds the tenacity of the materials glued together. 

Furthermore tests with the newly-developed PASCO©PRIME have shown that the adhesiveness on other difficult types of material that is difficult to glue (e.g. polytetraflourethylene PTFE), silicone rubber, thermoplastic elastomers [TPE] can also be improved. 

One major advantage of the newly developed PASCO©PRIME is the possibility of processing the pre-treated parts even after a certain period of time. Extensive tests have proven that the parts to be joined can be put on intermediate storage for a longer period of time after the dissolvents have evaporated without major effects to be noticed on the degree of tenacity. Chart #2 gives the example of certain selected synthetic materials to show that it should be taken regard of the different obtainable degrees of tenacity (depending on the material) when putting parts on extremely long-term intermediate storage.
